HR software for medical, dental and veterinary practices, compared
The best HR software for a practice depends on the job you are hiring it for: a handbook and a human advisor, payroll, hourly scheduling, a general HRIS, or staff records with license alerts and reviews. This page puts eight options side by side for managers and owners who handle people with no HR department behind them, with each vendor's own price page as the source and a plain statement of when they are the better choice. We are one of the eight, and the last section says where we lose.

Each option, and when to choose it
HR for Health
Dental, medical and veterinary practices that want HR advisors and a compliant handbook with the software.
Price: Basic $179/month (single location, no payroll); Essentials from $249/month; Plus from $348/month; Premium from $374/month. Essentials, Plus and Premium add costs per location and tax ID. (source)
How you buy: Sales conversation; setup fee on most plans.
Choose them when: You want an employment-law-backed handbook and hours with an HR advisor more than you want software, and you will pay a setup fee for it.
CEDR HR Solutions
Practices that want unlimited HR expert support and a custom handbook.
Price: Opening Act $120/month for up to 5 employees plus $3.50 per additional employee (software only); Premier Advisor $230/month plus $3.50 per additional employee (adds HR experts). Handbook $2,499 standalone, $1,999 bundled. (source)
How you buy: Membership; handbook purchase; payroll optional.
Choose them when: A hiring, leave or termination question is the thing that keeps you up at night and you want a person on the phone for it.
BambooHR
Small and mid-size companies of any kind that want a general HRIS with hiring and onboarding.
Price: Core $10, Pro $17, Elite $25 per employee per month with volume discounts; for 25 or fewer employees, flat $250, $425 and $650 per month. (source)
How you buy: Published prices; quote form.
Choose them when: You want hiring, onboarding, records, time off and payroll in one general system and reviews are secondary.
Connecteam
Deskless and hourly teams: scheduling, time clock, communication, with HR tools as a separate hub.
Price: Small Business plan free for up to 10 users; HR & Skills Hub from $29/month for the first 30 users (monthly billing) plus per-user fees above 30; Operations and Communications hubs priced separately. (source)
How you buy: Self-serve; free tier.
Choose them when: Your staff are mostly hourly and deskless and shift scheduling and a time clock matter more than reviews.
Gusto
Small businesses that start from payroll and add HR.
Price: Published on gusto.com; the page could not be read by our checker on the checked date. Payroll plans are priced per month plus per person; performance reviews are in a higher plan or add-on. (source)
How you buy: Self-serve, monthly.
Choose them when: Payroll is the problem you are solving first and a lighter review tool on top is enough.
Rippling
Growing companies that want HR, IT and finance on one platform.
Price: Quote only; the pricing page could not be read by our checker on the checked date. (source)
How you buy: Sales quote.
Choose them when: You also want device management and app provisioning for a team that is mostly at a computer.
Paylocity
Mid-size employers that want payroll and HR from one vendor with an implementation team.
Price: No public price on the checked date; sales quote. (source)
How you buy: Sales quote and implementation.
Choose them when: You are past 100 staff, want payroll and HR together, and have someone to run an implementation.
LVL Up Performance
Built for managers and owners who handle people with no HR department behind them: staff records, time off, license and certification expiry alerts, and performance reviews that run on a date.
Price: Team $29 a month for up to 25 staff; Growth $79 for up to 100. No setup fee. 14-day trial, no card, then read-only until a plan is chosen. (pricing)
Choose us when: the office manager is HR, nobody has a license tracker that alerts, reviews are not happening, and payroll is already handled elsewhere.
Where we lose
- No payroll, and no plan to add it. Practices on Gusto, Rippling or Paylocity for payroll keep that system.
- No human HR advisor and no handbook service. HR for Health and CEDR sell exactly that; we refer those questions to an employment lawyer.
- No shift scheduling or time clock. Connecteam is built around them.
- A young product with two practices on it as of the checked date, and no third-party reviews yet.
Common questions
What is the best HR software for a medical practice?
It depends on the job you are hiring it for. For a handbook and a human HR advisor, HR for Health or CEDR. For payroll first, Gusto or Rippling. For hourly scheduling, Connecteam. For a general HRIS with hiring, BambooHR. For staff records, license and certification expiry alerts, time off and performance reviews in one place without an HR department, LVL Up Performance, from $29 a month for up to 25 staff.
What should a medical practice look for when choosing HR software?
Four things: one record per person with every license and certification and an alert before it expires; time off with balances the schedule can see; reviews that run on a date rather than on memory; and a clear statement that the system holds staff records, not patient records. Then the price for your real headcount, including any setup fee and the handbook if it is required.
Do any of these verify licenses with the state board?
None of the products compared here claim primary-source verification on their pricing pages. They track the dates you enter and alert ahead of them. Payer credentialing is a credentialing service's job.
Which of these includes payroll?
Gusto, Rippling and Paylocity are payroll-first. HR for Health and CEDR offer payroll as an add-on. BambooHR sells payroll as an add-on. LVL Up and Connecteam do not do payroll.
How were these prices checked?
Each vendor's own pricing page was read on October 6, 2026. Where a page could not be read or publishes no price, the table says so instead of guessing. Corrections to mauricio@lvlupperformance.com.
Method and corrections
We read each vendor's pricing page on October 6, 2026 and recorded what it said. Year-one figures use list prices for one location with 25 staff and the lowest plan that includes software for people records; add-ons are excluded unless the vendor requires them. Nothing here comes from reviews, forums or a sales call. If a figure is wrong or out of date, email mauricio@lvlupperformance.com and we will fix it and note the change.
