Dental Hygienist License Renewal in Alabama
The Board of Dental Examiners of Alabama sets the rules. Renewal: every year (annual registration; certificate valid October 1 through September 30); deadline: No later than September 30 of each year. Continuing education: 12 hours of continuing education every year. Each fact below is quoted from an official state source, linked beside it, and was checked on 2026-10-12. Confirm with the board before you rely on it: rules change.
Renewal cycle and deadline
every year (annual registration; certificate valid October 1 through September 30) — No later than September 30 of each year
Continuing education
12 hours of continuing education every year.
- at least 6 of the 12 hours must be live training
- current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, completed through live training (2 to 4 hours)
- 1 hour infectious disease control, annually
- 1 hour ethical considerations in the practice of dental hygiene, annually
Hygienists licensed in Alabama but practicing outside Alabama are excused from the CE requirement; on returning they must show CE for the years practiced outside the state, up to 5 years.
CPR / BLS
A dental hygienist shall maintain a current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)training through the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or an equivalent program. This program shall be completed through live training and certified for a minimum of two (2) hours and a maximum of four (4) hours.
Late renewal and lapse
Licenses not registered by September 30 are converted to expired status on October 1. Between October 1 and December 31 an expired hygienist may reinstate to active status by meeting all applicable renewal requirements and paying the annual registration fee. On January 1 licenses not registered are automatically suspended; if suspended for less than five years, reinstatement requires the annual registration fee for each intervening year (maximum five) and the statutory maximum reinstatement penalty under Ala. Code 34-9-16.

The renewal is the hygienist's to complete, but a lapsed license is the practice's problem on the schedule. Keep each hygienist's expiry date where an alert reaches both of you well before it, long enough for any CE still owed. The free renewal calendar makes reminders for your own calendar; LVL Up Performance keeps the dates on each staff record and alerts ahead. Neither tracks CE hours or checks anything with the board.
