Continuing education
19 hours of continuing education per two-year renewal period.
- One-half of the continuing education must be in live presentations or live workshops
- A basic life support course through a program approved by the Board for each renewal period (only 2 hours of BLS may count toward the credit-hour requirement)
- A 2-hour course covering ethics, professional responsibility and the Indiana statutes and administrative rules per renewal period
No more than 5 credit hours may be earned in courses relating specifically to practice management; Online pre-recorded self-study with no live interaction counts only as one-half the CE requirement (distance learning); online webinars with presenter interaction count as live; The board page lists these as not required to complete CE: a person whose initial license was issued within the example window (March 2, 2024 to March 1, 2026), a graduate student or person in a residency program offered by an approved organization, and a person the Board determines unable to practice dental hygiene due to a disability

Late renewal and lapse
The board page states a fee of $150.00 for renewal of a dental hygiene license expired more than three years, and that a license expired three or more years must be reinstated (CE since expiry, CPR card, statement of practice, possible Board appearance). No late-fee amount for a license expired less than three years is stated on the page.

For the office manager
The renewal is the hygienist's to complete, but a lapsed license is the practice's problem on the schedule. Keep each hygienist's expiry date where an alert reaches both of you well before it, long enough for any CE still owed. The free renewal calendar makes reminders for your own calendar; LVL Up Performance keeps the dates on each staff record and alerts ahead. Neither tracks CE hours or checks anything with the board.
