Dental Hygienist License Renewal in Nebraska

The Nebraska Board of Dentistry (licensing administered by the Nebraska DHHS Licensure Unit) sets the rules. Renewal: every 2 years (odd-numbered years); deadline: March 1 of each odd-numbered year. Continuing education: 30 hours of acceptable continuing education during the preceding 24-month period. Each fact below is quoted from an official state source, linked beside it, and was checked on 2026-10-12. Confirm with the board before you rely on it: rules change.

Continuing education

30 hours of acceptable continuing education during the preceding 24-month period.

  • minimum of 2 hours in infection control continuing education in the renewal period

Hours above 30 do not carry over. Caps per renewal period: 10 hours each for home study or initial CPR certification; 4 hours each for CPR re-certification or practice management; 2 hours each for table clinician/lecturer or direct clinical observation; 5 hours each for faculty overseeing student clinics, dental public health, well-being/substance abuse, ethics and professionalism, or volunteer activity. A minimum of 2 hours is required in each area where the licensee holds an expanded-function permit. The Board does not pre-approve CE.

Late renewal and lapse

A license not renewed by the deadline is expired and the hygienist cannot practice until it is reissued or reinstated; licensees who practice after expiration owe DHHS an administrative penalty of $10 per day up to $1,000, and other disciplinary action may follow. Reinstatement requires a Dental Hygienist Reinstatement Application with required documentation and fee.

For the office manager

The renewal is the hygienist's to complete, but a lapsed license is the practice's problem on the schedule. Keep each hygienist's expiry date where an alert reaches both of you well before it, long enough for any CE still owed. The free renewal calendar makes reminders for your own calendar; LVL Up Performance keeps the dates on each staff record and alerts ahead. Neither tracks CE hours or checks anything with the board.
