Dental Hygienist License Renewal in Idaho

The Idaho State Board of Dentistry sets the rules. Renewal: every 2 years (biennial; transitioning from fixed March 31 odd-year dates to two-year birth-date renewal beginning 2026-08-01); deadline: Dental hygienists renewing by March 31, 2027; after that, licenses expire on the licensee's birthday (statute 54-920 still reads: prior to March 31 of each odd-numbered calendar year). Continuing education: 30 oral health/health-related continuing education hour credits per biennial renewal period (verifiable CE or volunteer practice). Each fact below is quoted from an official state source, linked beside it, and was checked on 2026-10-12. Confirm with the board before you rely on it: rules change.

Continuing education

30 oral health/health-related continuing education hour credits per biennial renewal period (verifiable CE or volunteer practice).

IDAPA 24.31.01.100.06 states only the 30-hour total for active-status renewal; no required topics are listed in the rule. Board news (2026-07-09) says there are no changes to current CE requirements in the biennial transition.

CPR / BLS

Applicants for initial licensure will provide proof of current BLS certification. Practicing licensees must maintain current BLS certification.

Late renewal and lapse

Failure to timely submit a complete renewal application and license fee results in expiration of the license and termination of the right to practice. Failure to submit a complete renewal application, license fee and $50 late fee within 30 days of expiration results in cancellation of the license. A license canceled less than 2 years may be reinstated with required application and license fees and evidence of all required CE hours; canceled more than 2 years requires meeting first-time-applicant requirements.

For the office manager

The renewal is the hygienist's to complete, but a lapsed license is the practice's problem on the schedule. Keep each hygienist's expiry date where an alert reaches both of you well before it, long enough for any CE still owed. The free renewal calendar makes reminders for your own calendar; LVL Up Performance keeps the dates on each staff record and alerts ahead. Neither tracks CE hours or checks anything with the board.
