Confirm with the board before you rely on it: rules change.

Continuing education

15 hours of approved continuing education per annual renewal.

  • Current hands-on course in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation for health care providers (evidence to be maintained)
  • If the hygienist monitors patients under general anesthesia, deep sedation, or moderate sedation: four hours every two years directly related to monitoring of such anesthesia or sedation, as part of the required hours

Courses not acceptable: estate planning, financial planning, investments, and personal health. Up to three of the 15 hours may be satisfied by uncompensated delivery of dental hygiene services to low-income individuals through a local health department or free clinic.

CPR / BLS

A dental hygienist shall be required to maintain evidence of successful completion of a current hands-on course in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation for health care providers.

Late renewal and lapse

A license not renewed by the deadline automatically expires and becomes invalid; a $25 late fee applies, and the board may renew if the renewal form, renewal fee and late fee are received within one year of the deadline. After more than one year expired, reinstatement requires an application, the $200 reinstatement fee, CE (up to 45 hours) and evidence of continuing clinical competence.

For the office manager

The renewal is the hygienist's to complete, but a lapsed license is the practice's problem on the schedule. Keep each hygienist's expiry date where an alert reaches both of you well before it, long enough for any CE still owed. The free renewal calendar makes reminders for your own calendar; LVL Up Performance keeps the dates on each staff record and alerts ahead. Neither tracks CE hours or checks anything with the board.
