Dental Hygienist Registration Renewal in United Kingdom

The General Dental Council (GDC) sets the rules. Renewal: annual (dental care professionals' retention year 1 August to 31 July); CPD runs in five-year cycles; deadline: 31 July each year for dental care professionals (including dental hygienists). Continuing education: 75 hours of verifiable CPD per five-year cycle (DCP cycle 1 August to 31 July); at least 10 verifiable hours in every two-year period; annual or end-of-cycle CPD statement at renewal. Each fact below is quoted from an official state source, linked beside it, and was checked on 2026-10-13. Confirm with the board before you rely on it: rules change.

CPR / BLS

GDC does not set a CPR/BLS certificate as a renewal condition on the pages checked. 'All registrants must follow the guidance on medical emergencies and training updates issued by the Resuscitation Council (UK).' Recommended CPD: medical emergencies, at least 10 hours in each CPD cycle and at least two hours every year.

Late renewal and lapse

If you miss the payment deadline your name may be removed from the register and you cannot practise in the UK; restoration needs a restoration fee (DCP fee depends on the month; June-July also requires the ARF).

For the office manager

The renewal is the hygienist's to complete, but a lapsed license is the practice's problem on the schedule. Keep each hygienist's expiry date where an alert reaches both of you well before it, long enough for any CE still owed. The free renewal calendar makes reminders for your own calendar; LVL Up Performance keeps the dates on each staff record and alerts ahead. Neither tracks CE hours or checks anything with the board. If licenses are one gap among several, the ten-question practice check shows which other records are missing.
